Riding hard and feeling the wind rush past you can be a great feeling. It’s part of what defines the motorcycle experience. These don’t only improve performance and ease your fatigue, but they also look pretty sweet on your Harley-Davidson. Luckily you’re not stuck with just one choice for windshields. There are a variety of styles out there, so you can get one that fits both your look and your motorcycle’s design. We want to talk about a the reasons for windshields and what types are out there here, but if you would like to come and get one of these equipped to your bike, talk to us at Barnes HD®! Our dealership is located in Langley, BC, and we’re only a short right from Surrey, British Columbia.
Purpose
You might be a little reluctant to add a windshield to your motorcycle, because if you haven’t used one before, the benefits might not be so obvious. Well in certain environments, especially here around Langley, windshields can make your riding experience better than ever before. With this accessory, you’ll no longer have wind, rain, hail, and other annoying debris over your head. You can ride as fast as you want without being touched by the elements. This means that you won’t get nearly as exhausted after riding for a long time. Windshields reduce fatigue, so especially if you commute a long distance or frequently enjoy long road trips, you will appreciate the decreased wind. With the blockage from rain, snow, and mud kicked up by surrounding vehicles, you’ll stay dry and warm even in colder seasons.
Types of Windshields
With windshields, you have 3 different choices for what type you want: fairing mounted, fork mounted, and deflectors. Because the windshield on a bike functions differently from how it does on a car, these different types of windshields have different constructions for different purposes. Fork mounted windshields shields the head from wind and debris, and fairing mounted ones do essentially the same thing. Deflectors are much different though. These accessories direct the air away from the engine, which can help you out a lot. Not only can it damage your motor, but that wind passing over the engine then moves to your legs, making them very hot. With batwing-style fairing deflectors, which push wind away from your body, and can be adjusted to allow more air to come in if you want some wind-chill. If you want to deck out your bike, try combining a few of these features, both windshields and deflectors, to get the best experience possible.
Appropriate Height
No matter what kind of windshield you decide to buy, the most important factor is its height. If it’s not the proper height, it will be useless. For instance, if the windshield isn’t high enough to protect you, you’ll still get pummeled with all the wind and debris like you would without a windshield. On the other hand, if you mount it too high, you might have trouble seeing properly. A lot of the windshields out there can adjust to your preferences, so it’s a good idea to get one of these. In general, you should adjust one of these so that the top of the windshield is right below your line of sight. This way, the road debris will be pushed right over your head.
Windshields from Harley-Davidson
Harley-Davidson has several types of their own windshields that all work perfectly with your motorcycle. The Sport windshields is specialized for minimizing rocks and road debris, while a compact windshield is affordable, easy to install, and still offers plenty of protection. A King windshield is made for anyone who wants absolutely no debris kicked in their face. It provides maximum comfort for a smooth ride all day long. The Ventilator is Harley’s adjustable windshield, which has vents that can be opened for a refreshing breeze. Last of all, the Wind Splitter also has adjustable ventilation like the Ventilator, but has a sportier, less conspicuous design.
